When a pilot project breaks new ground
How Gluth is building a future beyond the automotive sector with HIWIN
In Straubing, where Gluth Systemtechnik GmbH has been an established partner in the special-purpose machinery sector – particularly for the automotive industry – for decades, things are beginning to change. Familiar markets are stagnating, and it is precisely during such periods that new opportunities for innovation beyond the usual scope emerge. Gluth is now taking a path that many companies shy away from: consciously breaking into new fields and investing specifically in innovative sectors. To capitalise on these opportunities, a partner is needed who acts as a genuine accelerator – through service, short lead times and a willingness to further develop processes in collaboration with the customer.
A key component of this strategic expansion is a current pilot project in automation, in which precise handling and positioning processes are being implemented for a new end customer. A project that left much open to interpretation whilst, at the same time, making everything possible.
Between uncertainties, ideas and real progress
As is usual with pilot projects, the framework conditions were still vague at the outset. The task, however, was clear: to build a prototype system that safely handles different aluminium profiles, inserts a functional component and positions it precisely. And all this for a new end customer with high standards regarding quality and documentation.
The design therefore evolved in parallel with the customer’s processes – a typical course of events for pilot projects. A particular challenge was determining how many axes the system would ultimately require and how these should be optimally sized. Rather than the highest precision in the µm/range, the focus for this application was primarily on reliable handling, high throughput and a robust, durable sizing.
A project of this kind requires a partner who understands the shared goal, responds flexibly and delivers technically reliable solutions. This is where HIWIN GmbH came into the picture.
“We went round in circles quite a few times,” recalls Matthias Murer, deputy head of mechanical design at Gluth. “But that’s normal – the important thing is that we make progress together.”
It was precisely this joint progress that was achieved through a HIWIN-based solution: a modular, robust and repeatable XY gantry, which Gluth developed from precisely matched HIWIN system components. “Ultimately, we supplied our HM-S linear modules with spindle drive, rolled ballscrews supplied separately, fixed bearing units and our HG series linear guideways,” explains Johannes Bruckmeier from HIWIN’s field sales team. “The advantage of our portfolio is that we can provide the right motion and positioning unit for every requirement – perfectly coordinated, scalable and all from a single source – our HIWIN source.”
The linear modules used are the central element of the solution. They offer precisely the characteristics that were crucial for the project and for Gluth: high rigidity, efficient use of installation space – even with long strokes – and the ability to build a complete multi-axis system from them without additional effort. At the same time, the system could be seamlessly integrated into the existing control architecture. This combination made HIWIN the ideal choice for this pilot project.
Standardisation as a principle of success – when two philosophies fit together perfectly
One distinctive feature that links both Gluth and HIWIN: they share the same development principle. Technically mature base components, combined with the ability to implement project-specific requirements quickly and reliably – that is exactly what pilot projects need.
The newly developed HIWIN-based XY gantry integrated seamlessly into Gluth’s standard platform “Glufee” – a strategic recipe for success, as modular structures and the reuse of existing systems significantly reduce development times – another key reason for the project’s subsequent positive evaluation.
Gluth has been working with HIWIN components for years, including ballscrews and linear guideways. The pilot project also saw the first use of linear axis modules from the drive technology specialist. Gluth made the initial selection using the online sizing tool. “The technical support team also assisted us in validating and optimising the components,” reports Matthias Murer from Gluth. “This combination of digital tools and personal advice gives you the confidence that you’ve really made the right selection.”
Another advantage from Gluth’s perspective: the components selected in the tool can be ordered directly via the HIWIN webshop – a process that also significantly accelerates and simplifies the purchasing process. “For us in purchasing, this is also a real added value,” adds Markus Herb of Gluth. “We can see prices and availability immediately and order the recommended components without any hassle. Hardly any other supplier offers this level of transparency and speed.”
It is precisely this seamless combination of digital tools, personal advice and a straightforward procurement process that provides that extra edge, making projects noticeably more successful.
“Furthermore, HIWIN has once again impressed us in this project with its fast, customer-focused and pragmatic service,” adds Markus Herb, from the purchasing department at Gluth. “When something did go wrong, the replacement was on our desk within a week. No fuss, no long waiting times – just a solution. That sent a strong signal to us: we can rely on this partner.”
This collaboration demonstrates how working with a partner like HIWIN can act as a real catalyst for acceleration – through service, short lead times and a willingness to further develop processes together with the customer.
For Gluth, this project is an important step towards new markets. For HIWIN, it is proof that the quality of the components and the customer-focused service also impress in demanding pilot projects.
Together, the two companies have not only realised a machine, but also created a new perspective. The foundations have been laid. The doors to new industries are open. And the next project is sure to follow.
